Driving on the motorway

Driving on the motorway

Motorways are, officially, the safest roads you can drive on.

In 2023, there were very few casualties of any type on motorways, despite motorways accounting for a fifth of all road traffic in Great Britain.

Also, motorways account for just 5% of road fatalities, despite making up 21% of road traffic. And motorways are getting even safer - 84 people were killed on motorways in 2023, sadly, but that was 16% lower than in 2022.1

However, when collisions do occur on motorways the consequences can be very serious due to the relatively high speeds involved and that fact alone can make drivers fearful of driving on a motorway.

Signs on the motorway

Joining and leaving busy motorways and overtaking other vehicles safely are skills that needs to be learned, ideally before drivers pass their driving test.

In addition, motorways are often very busy and the signage on motorways at junctions can be confusing especially when driving at high speed, in the dark or in adverse weather conditions.

These are just some of the reasons that the Broughton School of Motoring offers their customers the opportunity to drive on a motorway before they take their driving test but not all learner drivers are so fortunate.

If the thought of driving on a motorway makes you feel anxious you may wish to consider taking one of our popular motorway driving courses.

What the course covers

A two hour course will cover joining and leaving motorways, how to overtake safely, how to deal with breakdowns on a motorway, how to avoid breaking down in the first place and more.

A three hour course covers all of the above plus allows you to drive further and join/leave busier motorways under the expert guidance of your instructor.

The cost

Two hours (either in our car or yours) costs just £75 - a small price to pay for the peace of mind it will give you and your loved ones.

Three hours costs £110.
